Outside large urban areas, the installation of a septic tank is the most effective way to get rid of domestic wastewater. In the so-called more rural regions, the municipal sewer system does not always service all residences, which forces landlords to use substitute sanitary facilities. But how do you choose the best septic tank? What are the different models and what are their distinctive features?
What is a septic tank and how does it work?
A septic tank is a sanitary device composed of a tank between 2,800 and 4,800 liters (700 to 1,200 gallons) with two openings at least 50 cm in diameter. Whether concrete or plastic, it is mainly used to recover and treat waste water from a residence through a settling process of waste materials. Indeed, while solids settle at the bottom of the tank in the form of sludge, the scum floats to the surface.
Septic tank models
Believing that there is only one model of septic tank is a serious mistake. Although the traditional septic tank, with a disposal field, was the only sanitary facility on the market for many years, today it is quite different. More advanced and more compact, the new septic tanks offer many advantages which delights many homeowners. Here is a brief overview of the various models currently on the market.
Bionest sanitary sewage system (biological reactor)
The Bionest type septic tank has two compartments divided by a wall at two-thirds of its length. It is equipped with a prefilter installed at the exit of the second compartment. In addition, the tank is covered with thermal insulation to prevent any cooling of the water. What sets it apart from a traditional septic tank is that it performs a permanent water recirculation from the outlet of the biological reactor to the entrance of the tank ventilated by a pump.
Note that using this type of tank requires a direct electricity input. This sanitary system is a permanent solution that suits all types of soil. Furthermore, constant aeration allows better waste water treatment and eliminate odors. Its low energy consumption and technological process ensures optimal treatment all year long.
Ecoflo system (biofilter)
The Ecoflo system is a septic system that collects and processes waste water from a home. However, this system is not a septic tank. It is rather the treatment device that follows it. How does it work? At first, the septic tank treats solids contained in waste water. Subsequently, the prefilter installed in the the tank will filter the waste water which will be transported to the Ecoflo.
Again it will be filtered until the pollutants are completely degraded. Finally, the pre-treated waters will be directed to the polishing field and will infiltrate the soil. Like the Bionest system, Ecoflo has many advantages. It is compact and adapts to all types of soils. It is also permanent and lasting.
